Rapid growth and poverty reduction in China, India, and other countries that were poor 20 years ago, has been a positive aspect of globalization. But globalization has also generated significant international opposition over concerns that it has increased inequality and environmental degradation (The World Bank).

THE PROBLEM

Students were disengaged when learning about the world in which they live, in an era when global competence matters more than ever.

I'm a social studies teacher, but my students didn't always look this curious...

Whatever may be the limitations which trammel inquiry elsewhere, we believe that the Great State University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth can be found (University of Wisconsin, 1894).

The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good and that it could be again (Field of Dreams).

I went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in (John Muir).

Chance favors the prepared mind (Louis Pasteur).

If not us, who? If not now, when? (a few crazy people).
